Shredder Maintenance Tips

Paper shredders don’t normally require much maintenance. However, to ensure that your machine is working at its best it’s a good idea to keep it both oiled and to clear the cutting heads of residual material.

Oiling your shredder

How often you need to oil your shredder will depend on usage levels and the type of shredder you have. However, this is an important part of your shredder maintenance to allow optimal movement of the cutting heads. As a general rule, cross cut shredders require oiling more frequently.

When oiling your shredder, you should only use dedicated shredder oil – using any other type of oil or lubricant may result in performance issues and also invalidate your shredder’s warranty.

Clearing the cutter heads

Before clearing the cutter heads of residual material, ensure that the shredder is switched off and unplugged at the mains. Refer to your shredder manual for specific instructions and do this frequently enough to make sure that material doesn’t build up and impair performance.

For larger office and industrial shredders you may have a service agreement in place for the above maintenance. Always refer to this and don’t do anything to invalidate your shredder warranty.
