Shredder Safety Precautions

Paper shredders have become increasingly popular in recent years as more and more people decide to shred personal and sensitive documents. However to ensure that shredders are used in the safest way possible, certain precautions should be taken:

Keep shredders away from children and pets

Shredders should be kept well out of reach of children and inquisitive pets – and when not in use, they should be unplugged to avoid accident or injury.

Do not put hands in the shredder opening

Keep hands and fingers clear of the shredder mouth and never force paper into a shredder – always feed it in smoothly.

Keep long hair and jewellery clear of the shredder mouth

Ensure that hair, jewellery, ties and any other loose fitting clothing stays clear of the shredder opening.

Look for shredders with advanced safety features

A number of shredders now feature advanced safety features such as Fellowes Safe Sense Technology. These will disable the shredder from operating if the throat area is touched.

Get proper instruction when using a shredder at work

When using a paper shredder in a work/office environment, ensure that you have been shown the correct way to operate it. This will help to avoid any accidental injury.
